H2ENABLE//New Sources of Green Hydrogen

Objective

H2Enable is an energy for gas project: it involves the use of renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen through the electrolysis of water that will be used as a chemical raw material, fuel for heat generation to replace natural gas, and as fuel for hydrogen-powered vehicles to replace other fossil fuels (mainly diesel).

Methodology

The H2Enable project aims to install a green H 2 production unit, based on a water electrolysis system. The electrolysis facility will be powered by renewable electricity through renewable solar and wind farms. As part of the R&D Work Packages, the project foresees the operationalization of a production management system that will integrate the supply of renewable electricity with the hydrogen plant, a monitoring system for each electrolyzer cell, based on IoT, which will allow the monitoring of aging and the anticipation of failures, thus increasing operating time, and reducing energy costs, and a tool for evaluating chemical production that allows us to follow the carbon footprint of the products produced, with the objective of facilitate the certification of ecological chemicals.

Ambition and expected results

With this project, Bondalti will contribute, together with the other partners, to:

1. the decarbonization of an important and wide value chain that currently uses gray hydrogen

2. the decarbonization of the European gas network

3. the creation of 5,600 direct and 14,088 indirect jobs along the entire value chain and generation of wealth for families

4. the promotion of social inclusion and the establishment of the population in the national territory in addition to large cities

5. The National Hydrogen Strategy and the Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality 2050

6. a more resilient electrical grid through the provision of electrical grid services, since the Portuguese electricity grid is interconnected with the Spanish system (thus forming the Iberian electrical system)
