Cantabria Natura: Protecting the Brown Bear

Cantabria Natura is a project started in 2022, with the Cantabrian Regional Government's Directorate General for Biodiversity, Environment and Climate Transition as a partner. The goal is to help monitor the grizzly bear - one of the most emblematic species of the Cantabrian mountains.

In the first year of the partnership, the Wildlife Recovery Center of Cantabria was provided with a portable X-ray device that allows for the field diagnosis of lesions that bears and other wildlife may present. In addition, this equipment also allows the continuation of an age determination project using non-invasive methods by X-raying the bears' paws.

This year, 2023, through the Cantabria Natura project, Bondalti has already provided the Government of Cantabria with 37 photo-arming cameras, real-time surveillance devices that increase knowledge in the field about the presence and distribution of the bear and other wild species. With this latest generation equipment, the technicians of the General Directorate of Biodiversity can improve their capacity and response times, which will qualitatively increase their actions for the protection and conservation of Cantabrian wildlife.

SDG

Cantabria Natura is aligned with one of the SDGs of greatest strategic relevance for Bondalti, 15 - Protect Earth Life by ensuring the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their Biodiversity.
