Bondalti has joined the management committee of Euro Chlor, the leading European association bringing together the continent’s largest chlorine producers. David Lopes, the company’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), will represent Bondalti on this governing body.
Bondalti’s inclusion in Euro Chlor’s leadership reinforces the Portuguese company’s active role in shaping strategy and defending the interests of an industry that is fundamental to Europe’s industrial and economic sovereignty.
Euro Chlor brings together members from 19 European countries, which collectively represent a maximum production capacity of 11 megatonnes. The association’s primary mission is to support a safe, sustainable and successful chlor-alkali industry in Europe (Euro Chlor supports a safe, sustainable and successful chlor-alkali industry in Europe), promoting best practice in the areas of safety, the environment and technological innovation.
A strategic pillar for the economy and society
Chlorine plays a fundamental and irreplaceable role in the modern economy and in society’s well-being. It is estimated that chlorine chemistry is absolutely essential for over 50 per cent of all European chemical production and forms the basis for over 90 per cent of modern medicines, playing a part in crucial areas ranging from water purification to advanced materials for the energy transition.
Despite its central importance, Euro Chlor and its members highlight the sector’s vulnerability and the pressing need to protect it at both the regulatory and economic levels. As a compound that cannot be transported over long distances, chlorine is often consumed immediately at the site where it is produced, and its nature prevents it from being stored for long periods. These operational characteristics require a robust, resilient European industrial ecosystem that is protected against external volatility and unfair competitive pressures.
With this appointment, Bondalti reinforces its commitment to the sustainable transition of the European chemical industry, actively contributing to security of supply and the competitiveness of a sector that is strategic for Europe’s future.
