Bondalti brings innovation and sustainability to Expoquimia

The development of innovative and disruptive solutions that accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy, through different projects linked to the green lithium and hydrogen value chains, will be a focus of Bondalti's participation in the next edition of Expoquimia, the most important Iberian event in the sector, which will take place between May 30 and June 2 in Barcelona.

The Bondalti space will be integrated into the area called “Smart Chemistry Smart Future”, an initiative promoted by the Business Federation of the Spanish Chemical Industry (FEIQUE), of which Bondalti is a member, and where 15 other entities will be present.

With a wide range of conferences and exhibitions, “Smart Chemistry Smart Future” has as its central theme the European Green Deal and constitutes an opportunity for leading companies in the chemical industry to publicize the essential contribution of the sector to the achievement of the goals set out in this large scale project. The objective of the plan launched by the European Commission is to make Europe the first carbon-neutral continent by 2050 and, by the end of the decade, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990 values (“Fit for 55” program).

Green energies on the decarbonization route

The projects under development by Bondalti linked to the green lithium and hydrogen value chains have a double objective: to meet the decarbonization goals of its own operations and to respond to a growing demand for sustainable solutions in the industrial sector. Both lithium and hydrogen are obtained through processes similar to the production of chlor-alkali, the company's core business and where the company has extensive experience.

In the field of green lithium, Bondalti is preparing for the large scale availability of a product with increasing demand, especially for the battery production industry for electric cars. The development of the chemical metal separation process is under way, resulting in their purification and refining, using energy obtained from renewable sources and replacing conventional processes with a larger carbon footprint.

In the area of green hydrogen, the company is involved in two projects, H2 Enable and GreenH2Atlantic. The first, which he leads, consists of the construction of an infrastructure for the production of green hydrogen in the Estarreja Industrial Complex, with an investment of around 140 million euros by 2025, which has already obtained the status of “Important Project of Common European Interest”, granted by the European Commission. As for GreenH2Atlantic, to be developed in Sines, it has the support of the European Commission's “Horizon 2020” program and was one of the three projects selected under the Green Deal to demonstrate the viability of green hydrogen on an unprecedented scale of production and technological application; it should start operating in 2025 and represents an investment of more than 150 million euros.

Bondalti's participation in Expoquimia will also include interventions by two company representatives, from the areas of new business and sustainability, scheduled for the third day of the event (June 1). José Nogueira, coordinator of the hydrogen area, will address the topic “New Energies for a Sustainable Society”, and Susana Carvalho, sustainability and climate transition coordinator, will present the “Bondalti Climate Transition Program”.

In this 20th edition of Expoquimia, the first in a post-pandemic context, about 19,000 visitors, more than 530 exhibitors and 900 brands are expected, spread over an area of 21,000 m2.

The Bondalti space will be located in hall P3, stand 123.
