Climate change mitigation 

Bondalti is committed to leading initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation, aligning its activities with global targets for climate transition.

Action in this area is therefore a central aspect of the business model and encompasses all areas of the organisation. The company is developing a comprehensive transition plan for climate change mitigation, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving the energy efficiency of its operations and contributing to a low-carbon economy.

In the Industrial Chemicals sector, Bondalti has its targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), recognising alignment with the latest climate science and the targets set under the Paris Agreement for 2035.

  • A 63.0% reduction in absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from Scopes 1 and 2 by 2035, using 2023 as the base year.
  • A 37.5% reduction in absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions, arising from fuel and energy related activities and the processing of products sold, over the same period.
  • Ensuring that 100% of its suppliers, particularly those providing goods and services and those involved in upstream transport and distribution, have science-based targets in place by 2030.

These targets and their validation by the SBTi mark a milestone in the company’s Climate Transition Strategy, which cuts across its various business areas and value chain.

Bondalti thus reinforces and complements the voluntary commitments previously undertaken, which remain in force as internal strategic milestones: to reduce Scope 1 emissions by 50% and Scope 2 emissions by 100% by 2030, compared with 2005 levels.

To achieve these objectives, Bondalti is taking action on several fronts: energy efficiency, electrification, switching energy sources, incorporating renewable energy and decarbonising the value chain, through the involvement of customers and suppliers.

At the Estarreja Chemical Complex, the company is implementing a 30 MWp photovoltaic plant for self-consumption and a battery energy storage system with 12 MW of power and 12 MWh of capacity. These projects will enable the company to increase its use of locally produced renewable energy, enhance the energy flexibility of its industrial units and reduce its dependence on the electricity grid.

At Bondalti Water, the plan takes the form of operational measures aimed at reducing emissions associated with its activities, including sustainable mobility, charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, and continuous improvement in the calculation of its carbon footprint.

Adaptation to climate change

In 2025, Bondalti strengthened its approach to adaptation to climate change by carrying out a structured exercise to identify, analyse and manage climate (physical and transition) and water-related risks. This analysis covered the Group’s assets and the entire value chain, particularly critical suppliers and customers. This work represents a significant step towards integrating climate risks into the company’s risk management processes and strengthening Bondalti’s resilience to future challenges.

More than just a set of targets, Bondalti’s climate transition represents an agenda of responsibility, innovation and industrial execution, aimed at reducing the company’s carbon footprint, strengthening the resilience of its operations and influencing its value chain on the path towards climate transition.
